Hello, and welcome to our Gas & Boiler Training page.
Although my lecturing duties have been severely limited for last year or two, I still, whenever possible, help out with the Gas ACS training and NVQ Assessing at Intaplumb.
Previously I have delivered boiler training courses, and I still run 2 or 4 a year depending on time and availability. The course work preparation is time consuming, and to deliver a course that packs in as much information as possible is difficult in such short time frames.
Realistically, and in truth, even a 5 day course would still only deliver limited training and the bare minimum of basic theoretical knowledge, and practical experience. This is a complex topic, involving electrical systems, controls, combustion, hydraulics, thermodynamics just to mention a few basics!
Many of the Plumbers that have attended their ACS re-assessments here at Intaplumb have commented on the poor standard of boiler training courses available, especially the 1-Day bash on Multimeters!
Manufacturers training courses are usually structured around a morning of sales pitch on their brand new model, 'installers club membership', a free branded pen, note pad, and if you're lucky a run through of the commissioning of a new boiler in the afternoon.
Top level courses will include a hot lunch! Whoopy Doo....
I've been doing this for 38 years, and I'm still doing it. I know, what you need to know.
It's unlikely you're going to get what you need from a £50 manufacturers course.
The pitiful truth is.. there are no formal or recognised qualifications for Boiler Service Engineer status. Nor are there any recognised, accredited training courses for this level in the Gas Industry. (apart from British Gas employees).
The inept, and backward thinking Gas Safe, can at best, endorse a handful of questions, multiple choice, which are open book, on Boilers in CEN-1 in the ACS Gas assessment.
NONE
of which are related in any way to the complexities of boiler controls or sequencing! Nor how the technology relates to safe operation and testing. (Mind boggling).
However, once you've had your 3 chances of picking the right answer from 4 choices, AND with the answers in a book in front of you, you're now deemed to be qualified, and competent to work on some of the most dangerous and volatile technology in domestic homes... Really?
I was lucky... Very lucky.
In a period of time between jobs and projects, I was very fortunate to gain employment with Vaillant. The years I spent there opened up a new world of technology, education, experience and knowledge. Without a doubt this was a life changing event.
Combined with my experience with British Gas, and as a Gas Safe/Corgi Inspector alongside my Lecturing and NVQ assessor experience, I now have a vast library of knowledge and experience to call upon when I get stuck on a boiler, or heating problem. Lucky me..
But what about you? Where do new operatives, or existing operatives go, to gain the training, knowledge, and supervision required? Answer... Nowhere!
It just isn't out there.
I can assure any Plumbers, or would be boiler engineers, it's a long process. It takes years to really become proficient in this aspect of the industry. Especially with manufacturers appliances becoming more and more unique, sophisticated and specialised.
Bpec is an industry recognised awarding body. Not just for Plumbing qualifications, but Gas and Electrical certification and awards. Including the Building & Construction Industry.
Bpec currently run a 'Essential Electrics' qualification, that is accredited and a recognised formal qualification for operatives carrying out basic electrical works in industry.
Personally, I see little or no point in attending a Boiler Training Course, where the training provider issues their own 'made up' certificate of attendance, or completion.
Therefore, the BPEC ESSENTIAL ELECTRICS
qualification is built-in to any boiler training course I deliver. You WILL leave with a recognised, accredited qualification.
The course is approximately 2 full days. It contains a syllabus that is well suited to boiler repairs and diagnostics, and is a great platform to advance into boiler technology.
It also enhances your understanding of basic electrical theory, testing, and safe practice.
